DIVISON 1 - Best of three

Game One at Henley & Grange Sat 16.03.24

Lost 3-6

Wade, as leadoff hitter, got the ball rolling with a home run in the first, but unfortunately, we had to wait until the eighth to score again, and it was a two-run dinger from Cesar.  In the meantime, we were hitting reasonably well but couldn't string them together and let the home team off the hook.  Cesar's hit got them worried, as the scoreline narrowed to a two-run deficit, and when Finners doubled in the next at bat, a pitching change was hurriedly made.  The Rams got a consolation run in their eighth, and it was enough to clinch the victory.  They scored too many soft runs - for instance their first two were from a passed ball and a walk (in fact there were too many walks).  Cesar can't keep out of the highlights reel and took a blinder at left field, and after AJ sat down after six, Troy closed.

Hits :  Wade Moore (HR), Cesar Perez (HR) 2, Mitch Fienemann, Joel Chapman, Nick Kuhn 1.

We were close - but no cigar.

Game Two at Henley & Grange Sun 17.03 24

Lost 0-7

Similar situation to the previous day's game - some good hits but couldn't string them together to put pressure on their pitcher and found the gaps hard to find, making the Ram's fielders' jobs easier.  They were scoring at a slow pace, getting one at a time, so after five we were well and truly in the hunt at 0-4, and then in the next three innings - sixth, seventh and eighth - we left multiple runners out there in scoring positions.  Hugely disappointing.  A tiring Drew gave up a homer and was relieved by Cesar who also saw one fly over his head, and the home side was on track to take the win.  Errors contributed largely towards the end and gave Henley a big advantage.  We had contained their best hitter for the most part of the two games, but it was he who put the first of those two dingers over the fence. Taheny has made the most of his elevation to the top side and took a ripper of a catch in the outfield.

Hits :  Drew Janssen 2, Breandan Taheny, Cesar Perez, Mitch Fienemann, Troy Nicholson, Joel Chapman 1.

So, that's that for the season - nice to make the finals by finishing second on the ladder - but one more week would have put the icing on the cake.

DIVISION TWO

at Henley & Grange Sat 16.03.24

Lost 7-11

Another Preliminary Final appearance, and it got off to a poor start when the home side got going with five big ones - mainly unearned.  We then left runners on base and couldn't get them across the line, and it was left to Pappsy to hit a two run homer to get us back into the game.  Another innings of unearned runs (this time four) really put us behind the eightball, and Muggs's RBI gave us hope, and a fine double-play gave us a boost in spirit. A second two run bomb by Pappsy got us closer, but, after using five pitchers, we went down fighting.

Hits :  Joe Papps ( 2HR) 3, Jose Ramirez, Ryan Muggleton 2, Daniel Chapman, Breandan Taheny, Ollie Hayes 1.

That's a wrap for the season - the guys played really well most of the year. and deserved their spot in the finals, but, like Div One, one more week would have been nice.

WOMEN'S LEAGUE

DIVISION ONE

Semi Final v Sturt at Sturt Sun 17.03.24

Lost3-18

The end of a tough, tough season for the girls.  Reigning Premiers make you the hunted, everyone wants to knock you off, and with the injuries, work commitments, interstate transfers etc, the season was, in fact, as I said, tough.  Not once did they falter, and played the season out like the troopers they are.  Lots of players put their hands' up to help out, and we fielded a team each week to uphold the green and gold.  Meggsy for example, having been called up at the last minute, doesn't know how to give up, and after damaging her knee once again, was seen trying to steal a base. Madness.  Onwards and upwards - next year - as you can't keep these ladies down for long.

Hits :  Indie O'HazySzchorn 2, Amara Quinn, Darna BoersVeen, Sarah McMahon, Megan BoersVeen, Jemila Dodd, Kym Wilson 1.

JUNIORS

LITTLE LEAGUE (U13s)

Continued to shine in the finals. The team won its second final with an impressive 14 to 2 wins over Southern Districts. Our scorer, Ben, called out the team's outstanding defensive work by holding up runners/batters to single advances. Riley had a stand-out game with only 5 pass balls, with runners only advancing a base. We were lucky at bat with a few errors going our way, allowing us to increase the margin quickly. Hats off to Myles, who recorded the game's only safe hit for us, scoring 2 runs for his effort. The team is in good spirits and excited to represent Woodville in the Grand Final at home this Sunday.

Batting:

Riley 3 runs

Archie 3 runs

Felix 2 runs

Bodi 1 run

Myles had a double from one plate appearance that brought in 2 runs to a total of 6 in the 3rd.

Isaac 1 run

Poppy 1 run

Pitching

Archie 3 innings, 15 batters faced, 6 strikeouts, 2 runs.

Felix 2 innings, 10 batters faced, 6 strikeouts, 1 run.

JUNIOR LEAGUE (U15s)

v 1 defeated Henley and Grange 8-1 to make it to next week's Grand

Final some good team batting with plenty of discipline at the plate drawing multiple walks and setting the game up well early on, some great defensive work to back up some great pitching by Alice Brown with 6 strikeouts in 6 innings of work and then Seb Bravo closing it out.

Hits: Archie Wallis 1 & Will Stock 1

SENIOR LEAGUE (U17s)

After a nervous start to the semifinals where Kensington scored a few early we managed to put the maximum 7runs per inning in the bottom of the first to ensure the momentum stayed on our side. Diesel went and settled down and threw a very good game with lots of strikes which brought our fielders into the game where they helped him out with solid defence. We didn't stop with those 7 runs and kept adding on inning after inning. Couple clutch hits by Matthew, Jack and Indie and all of a sudden, the game was out of reach for them. Ollie Hayes came in to close the doors in the 5 and the 6 in a perfect matter.

Let's go win that flag which the woodies deserve.

GODANATS!!

DIVISION ONE Game One  -  At Don Klaebe Field v Adelaide Sat 9.03.24

Lost 2-7

Due to the extreme heat the game was brought forward to an 11.00am start and reduced to seven innings or two hours. The Angels came to play and came out hitting, putting two on the board early but we replied immediately with one of our own when Drew's sac fly got Wade home, and so the score remained at 1- 2  for several innings.  After a sensational outfield catch by Nick Kuhn - we all thought it was Gary out there - Joel put one through the third baseman's legs to score Cesar and it was tied away until the sixth.  AJ had been producing, and came off due to the heat after 5 2/3 innings. We had two outs, but the Angels took advantage and, with the help of a few walks, put on five to seal the deal.  Nathan mopped up at the end, but our bats couldn't bridge the gap.  Hits  :  Drew Janssen, Joel Chapman 1.

DIVISION ONE Game Two  -  At Don Klaebe Field v Adelaide Sun 10.03.24

Lost 1-5

Another early start (10.00am) with seven innings the max. One in the first got them going, and it proved to be their only run 'til the seventh.  Drew was in control, and we were looking scary in our first when Cesar doubled, they intentionally walked Drew and an error filled the bases, but no run as a double play killed our chances.  We let their pitcher off lightly in the third when he sat down our three bats in five pitches, didn't even raise a sweat.  Our solitary run came in the fifth courtesy of a Wade RBI, but, with two outs in the last, their batter belted a Grand Slam to take the victory.  Because we finished in second place on the ladder, we have a second chance and live again to play away next weekend against H & Grange.

Our Division Two side who didn't play due to the heat, also play at the same venue against H & Grange.

Juniors (U17, U15, U13) had their weekend sidelined because of the heat, and will resume their finals' campaignes next weekend, as will the Ladies Division One.

DIVISION ONE

Two games required to round out the season - one being a catch up game because of a washout at Kensington earlier in the season, and the other being the last game of the minor round.  So, there we were in a double-header situation - two games at home against the Cardinals, really needing at least the one win to make sure of locking in second place and home game finals.  Don't worry about one win, we beat them in both in comprehensive fashion.

DIVISION ONE  - Game one

At Don Klaebe Field Sat v Kensington 2.03.24

WON 6-0

We loaded the bases in the first and a Troy sacfly got us up and about, and we continued to hit and the runs came consistantly, including a nice one by Ollie Hayes in his first Div One start.  Drew snaffled the ball and it's on its way to a pool room in Mildura.  AJ went the distance without giving up a run, and really had a great outing.  Troy put the icing on the cake by knocking one over the fence in the last dig to finalise procedings.  Hits  :  Wade Moore, Cesar Perez, Drew Janssen, Troy Nicholson (HR), Adenson Verastegui (AJ) 2, Oliver Hayes 1.

DIVISION ONE - Game two

At Don Klaebe Field Sat v  Kensington 2.03.24

WON 4-0

Slightly different starting lineup with some of the guys coming back from the Div Two game at Sturt.  Drew had the new ball and didn't disappoint as he threw a fine four innings before giving way to Cesar and then Troy closed them down.  Drew had a good one, showing the opposition how to steal bases and Joel was strong with an RBI.  We got a touch of nerves when they managed to load the bases in the fifth, but no worries, Cesar snuffed them out.  Hits  :  Cesar Perez, Drew Janssen, Joel Chapman 2, Greg Bravo 1.

So that's the minor round done and our next task is to knock off Adelaide in a three game series at Don Klaebe Field next weekend.  Get there !

DIVISION TWO

Away V Sturt

Lost

Didn't have the best of days but the good news is that they live to fight another day and take on Henley & Grange  away next weekend.

JUNIORS

Senior League (U17)

Started their finals campaign strong, beating Golden Grove 20-2 behind a strong team pitching performance headed by Diesel, Indie and Ollie Hayes.

The team showed their strength in hitting as well as pitching headlined by Lachie Stock collecting 2 hits and Tommy J blasting a double. All members of the team contributed with the bat from the get go, heaping immense pressure on the Golden Grove pitching staff.

We look forward to the next round of home finals as the team looks to continue their fantastic form.

Junior League (U15/1)

Woodville 15 Def Pt Adelaide 4

Junior League kicked off its finals campaign with a fantastic win over Pt Adelaide, we had a tight contest only recently with Port so we expected a tough match.  It started with Pt Adelaide being 3-0 up after some good early hitting, our nerves settled and we started hitting their starter who was looking strong, by the end of 3rd inning we were 5-3 up and the tide was turning.  Alice Brown was pitching well and did another outstanding job in 5 innings work giving up 6 hits and recording 2 strikeouts and some excellent defensive plays kept them scoreless in the 4th & 5th.  In the 4th inning we got the maximum 7 runs with some excellent team batting with hitters drawing plenty of walks with a couple of hits chimed in, another 3 runs in the bottom of 5th saw us 15-3 up and then they got 1 in top of the 6th after a lead off walk but game was over due to mercy rule in top 6th, a great closing effort by Sebastian Bravo.  Benji Hayes did a great job behind the plate and drew 4 walks and a nice line shot that was caught late in the game.  A great overall team effort.

Hits:

Chace Wallis 2 (1 RBI)

Sebastian Bravo 1 (1 RBI)

Remy Brooks 1 (2 RBI)

Archie Wallis 1 (1 RBI)

Luke Fawcett RBI ground out & RBI walk

Hugo Marshall RBI ground out

Alice Brown & Will Stock both RBI walks, incidentally Alice had 3 walks and a HPB in 4 plate appearances.

Intermediate League (U14)

Remy and Bodhi pitched well against the number 1 team filled with good hitters. Some great work in the field by Xavier at 3B and Felix at 1B saw us keep Golden Grove scoreless in the 2nd innings and only concede 1 run in the 4th. Remy fielded well off his own pitching and took a fantastic catch when moved to short stop. Luke put in a good shift behind the plate.

Whilst not reflected in the 15-0 loss, the team played some great baseball against a very good opponent.

Hits: Remy 1, Xavier 1

Little League (U13)

The team had an excellent start to the finals series, winning 9-3 against Golden Grove after mercying them in the 5th innings. Even though some of the players were new to the finals, they demonstrated that they could handle the pressure. The team and its players received a lot of cheering and support.

Pitching:

Archie 3 innings, 58 pitchesFelix 2 innings, 26 pitches

Batting:

Archie 1 double, 1 triple, 2 runs

Felix 2 doubles, 1 run

Bodi 1 double 1 run

Riley 1 double, 2 runs

Kylah 1 single, 1 run

Myles 1 single, 1 run

Isaac 1 single

Michael 1 single

Eli 1 run
